I need to decide very soon on a very important one (well, important to my work, anyway), so any input would be appreciated.

I'd go with fsfs--it's zero maintenance and less headaches.
Remember, you can always switch to bdb with a dump and load if you need to.

Thanks very much. Not only did I decide to go with fsfs (which is where I was leaning anyway), I got the admin of the official departmental repository to switch from bdb to fsfs.
And after even one day of use… oh boy, do I like it.
